Cabo San Lucas is a gorgeous resort city on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Cabo is known for its amazing beaches, water activities, and restaurants/bars. Knowing that Cabo has tons of water activities I was quick to jump on a tour to go see my favorite animal, sharks! Cabo Shark Dive has several different types of tours. I chose the Half Day Snorkeling/Swimming with Sharks Tour and it did not disappoint! I definitely plan on doing another tour with them when I head back down to Cabo.
What’s Included:
- Boat ride + guides
- Water and snacks
- Snorkel equipment (you can also use your own if you want!)
- Wet suit
- Underwater photography of your swim
What to Bring:
- Towel
- Change of clothes
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Camera/go-pro
- Snorkel equipment (if you have it)
- Sea sickness medicine (I wish I would have taken it!)
What to expect:
Besides all out awesomeness, expect a busy half day full of fun and adventure with the best guides around! Your day starts early has you head to the harbor to catch your boat. You will then head off shore to go locate some sharks! Time permitting, the guides might pull up close to the famous arch and allow you to take some pictures. You will then continue offshore and if you’re lucky maybe you’ll see some whales along the way if it’s whale season.
Once you arrive at “the spot” you will get a safety briefing. And be sure to pay attention, let’s be real, you are going in the water with sharks! It is very rare for a shark to attack you, but they are curious animals, so better safe than sorry! There will also be safety divers with you in the water at all times keeping you safe and making sure everyone is enjoying themselves. After the briefing, you wait. And wait. And probably wait some more. You have to remember that these are wild animals and you could potentially see no sharks. But in most cases you will see at least one, but you better practice your patience.
All of a sudden the guides yell “shark”! You quickly get on your wet suit and snorkel gear. The guides get in the water first to observe the sharks behavior to make sure it is safe. Then one by one they swim you to the safety rope where you get to observe these amazing creatures! We were lucky to see 2 silky sharks and they stuck around for quite awhile. It was a surreal experience being able to coexist in the water with sharks. In my opinion everyone should do this at least once to educate yourself as these animals are not “killers” as most movies make them out to be.
After you spend a good amount of time observing the sharks you get back on the boat and make your back to the harbor. During our tour we hit the jackpot and ended up spotting orcas on the way back! Our guides, being the passionate ocean lovers that they were, got just as excited as we did and allowed us to jump in with the orcas. I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to encounter this animal in the water. Being up close to this massive whale was a once in a lifetime and I will forever be grateful for that experience. I literally felt like I was in a Blue Planet episode.
After you get back to the harbor give your guides a big THANK YOU! And then go tell all your family and friends about the best experience you’ve ever had! If you want another great ocean adventure while in Cabo, check out my blog below about whale shark encounters!
