Located along the coast, Lisbon is Portugal’s largest and capital city. Lisbon is known for Fado Music, its architecture, beautiful views, and friendly locals. Don’t miss out on these 8 things when visiting Lisbon!

Belém Tower

The Belém Tower was built sometime between 1514-1520 and was later classified as a World Heritage Site in 1983. This tower was used to defend the city and was then transformed into a lighthouse along with being used for customs. Sitting within the water, the Belém tower is a beautiful sight to see with intricate detail in its architecture.

Commerce Square

Commerce Square is the main square in Lisbon. This was the site where the old Royal Palace once was. The square is along the Tagus River and was where ships would unload their goods. It was considered the “door” to Lisbon. The square is a gorgeous space to take a walk or to relax and take a break while exploring the city.

Rossio

Rossio Square is a very popular and lively square that is surrounded by some of Lisbon’s most well known restaurants, bars, and shops.

Monument to the Discoveries

Located near Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries is 52 meters tall and commemorates the age of discoveries in Portugal. Leading the ship is Prince Henry the Navigator followed by other well known Portuguese discoverers.

Visit the beach

Whenever I’m by the ocean I always choose to have a beach day! The beaches are not walking distance from Lisbon, but you can easily take a train or a car. Pack your beach bag and head to the water! You can even take some surf lessons and hang 10.

Day trip to Sintra

I highly recommend saving a full day to visit Sintra. It is just a short train ride away from Lisbon! Have your camera ready because each location is just as beautiful as the next. Check out my other blog, “Day Trip to Sintra” for information about how to get around Sintra and my recommended sights to see!

Visit the sardine shops

Sardines are considered a delicacy in Portugal and whether you like sardines or not, I suggest still going to visit one of their sardine shops. The shops are vibrant, decorative, and colorful as the walls are lined with sardine cans. And if you are feeling adventurous, try some! They have several different types to choose from.

São Jorge Castle

São Jorge Castle is a landmark that stands out as it is located on the summit of São Jorge Hill which is the highest summit in Lisbon. You are able to go inside the castle for ~11 dollars. Plus, you will get some of the best views of Lisbon!
