If you are traveling to Australia, be sure to visit Hobart! Hobart is the capital city of Australia’s island state of Tasmania. Between the views, the people, and the food scene, this is one city you don’t want to miss. Below are places I highly recommend checking out while visiting the beautiful city of Hobart, Tasmania:

Things to do and Places to See

Mount Wellington

Mount Wellington is a well-known mountain in Hobart that offers amazing views of the city and harbor! You can get some exercise and hike up the mountain or you can take a car or bus if you don’t have enough time to hike. Although, I highly recommend hiking up it as you get many different beautiful viewing points. There are various paths you can take up the mountain so be sure to do some research beforehand. Some routes even include an added bonus of a waterfall!

MONA Museum

Do you like art, wine, and beer? Then this is the place for you! I highly suggest setting aside one whole day for MONA. You embark on your adventure from the wharf in Hobart by taking a scenic ferry ride to the museum. Your ferry is equipped with seats, a bar, food, and bathroom! Once you arrive, you start your journey through MONA- Museum of Old and New Art. You can spend hours going through this museum as there are multiple floors of art that is interactive, abstract, and pieces that really make you think. After you’re done at the museum, go explore the grounds and stop in for some Moorilla Wine or Moo Brew Beer.

Cascade Brewery

If you want to enjoy a beer at the foot of Mount Wellington at Australia’s oldest brewery, then make your way over to Cascade Brewery. You can take a guided tour or just visit the brewhouse and enjoy their 3 acres of beautiful gardens!

Hobart’s Waterfront

Take a stroll along the harbor in Hobart. You will find seaside restaurants, stores, markets, and some pretty scenery!

Bruny Island Cruise

I would also set another day aside for this Bruny Island adventure. We took a day tour with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys. You will get picked up bright and early from Hobart and make your way to Bruny Island by bus and ferry. This company provides you with a breakfast (coffee/tea + large muffin) before your boat ride and a yummy lunch (vegetarian options available!) after you return to land. During your boat cruise, you will get to see some of Australia’s highest sea cliffs, enter sea caves, and look for coastal wildlife. It was an experience I’ll never forget. Your guides are highly trained and you will always feel safe. The guides were also informative and you’ll learn a lot! **if you easily get seasick, not sure this is the adventure for you, we experienced some rough seas!**

Street Eats at Franko

Every Friday during certain months of the year, Hobart has an event called Street Eats at Franko in Franklin Square. This is a night market where you can have a cultural food experience, drink, and listen to live music. Be sure to go with an empty stomach, there are tons of delicious food options to try! And after you’re done stuffing yourself with food, you can dance the calories away to the live bands.

Food and Drink

In Hobart, there are TONS of delicious restaurants, so be sure to wear your stretchy pants. Elizabeth Street is a well-known major street that runs through the city that is full of places to eat or to grab a drink. There is also a variety of options down by the wharf where you can enjoy a meal or drink by on the waterfront. A lot of places we went also had great vegetarian options and catered to most dietary restrictions if needed!

  • Metropolitan: delicious pizza place where the restaurant resembles the London Tube transit!
  • Raincheck Lounge: a cute cafe with friendly staff that offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I recommend the avocado toast!
  • Harbor Lights Cafe: this is the perfect place to eat breakfast right before heading to MONA as it is located right along the wharf where you will catch your ferry to the museum!
  • Veg Bar: This plant-based restaurant is so delicious that you don’t even know it’s all plant-based! I got the spaghetti with “meat” sauce and it literally tasted the same, so good!
  • Grinners: This dive bar has delicious tacos and beer, what more could you want?
  • Grape Wine Food Bar: this is a classy place along the wharf with an extensive wine list that serves delicious tapas style dishes.
  • Burger Haus: yummy high-quality burgers, enough said.
  • Drunken Admiral: if you are looking for some amazing seafood, this is the place to go! Be sure to book a reservation in advance as this restaurant is always busy!
  • The Stagg: this is a small family-run coffee shop that serves takeaway coffee. This place if perfect if you need something on-the-go.
  • Kalbi: this is a Korean restaurant with awesome food where you can eat a variety of shareable dishes with friends or family.

Hobart also has a decent beer scene and some great breweries to visit! Their breweries all have great outdoor seating to hang out and grab a beer.

Hobart, Tasmania is a wonderful city to visit that has things to do and see for all ages! When in Australia, I suggest making a quick trip to Hobart. If you are traveling throughout Australia, check out my other blogs on this amazing country:
