Bruges, Belgium also known as the “Venice of the North” is the perfect city in Europe to visit for a day. With its cobblestone streets, canals, and medieval feel, this city will capture your heart. Bruges quickly became one of my favorite cities I’ve visited. The city is easily accessible by train, which made it the perfect day trip when taking the train throughout Europe.

Things to do/see:

2be Beer Wall

This is a must-see when in Bruges. 2be Beer Wall is literally a huge wall full of beer on display. It is also a brewpub and bottle shop which makes for the perfect place to sit on their outdoor patio that overlooks the beautiful canals. They also have TONS of options in their shop, so be prepared to leave with some new drinks that you haven’t tried before!

Take a Boat Tour

With Bruges’ extensive canal system, exploring by boat is the perfect way to see and learn about this city! There are so many canals that the city has over 80 bridges crossing them! Be sure to have your camera ready as there will be several photo opportunities.

Eat all the Waffles and all the Chocolate

Belgium is known for their waffles and chocolate so I highly recommend indulging. You will be full, happy, and on a sugar high! In Bruges, we ate at Carpe Diem which has delicious food and tea. I got my waffles with ice cream and chocolate drizzle because I decided calories didn’t count that day. Just look at the picture below and I’m sure your mouth will start watering instantly. And for the chocoholics out there, be sure to visit one of Bruges’ chocolate shops to buy some artisan chocolates!

Brewery Bourgogne des Flandres

One of my favorite things to do in every country is to visit a brewery. I mean what’s better than enjoying some brews in a new place while meeting new people?! Bourgogne des Flandres is a gorgeous brewery that you can take tours of or just go to enjoy some beer. I highly recommend sitting outside along the canals, the views don’t disappoint. I also suggest getting a flight of their beer so that you can try a variety!

The Markt (Market Square)

Bruges’ Markt is a vibrant, busy place that’s full of life and panoramic views. The buildings surrounding the square are unique, colorful, and full of shops and places to eat. The square also provides a great view of the belfry tower which is also worth a visit. Fun fact, this square was once used to host medieval festivals, fairs, tournaments, and even executions!

Walk along the Canals

You could easily spend hours just walking (or biking) along the canals in Bruges. The canals are lined with adorable houses and buildings that all have its own unique architecture. It definitely made me feel like I stepped back in time. I felt a sense of calmness and peacefulness when walking the canals, especially if you step off the beaten path.
