Dresden is one of my favorite cities in Germany. This city was heavily bombed and destroyed during World War II and was built again from the ground up. Located in eastern Germany, Dresden is now a beautiful and prosperous city with amazing architecture. Don’t miss out on these sights while visiting Dresden:

The streets of Dresden

Frauenkirche Dresden

Dresden’s fantastic Frauenkirche is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Europe. In 1945, it was completely destroyed after the bombing of Dresden and the ruins became a memorial. This amazing piece of history and architecture was reopened in 2005 and nearly 4,000 original stones had been included in the new church. The dome of this church is also one of the largest in Europe.

Brühl’s Terrace

While in Dresden, take a stroll along Brühl’s Terrace which is also known as the “Balcony of Europe.” It is a beautiful walk and the perfect way to explore the city. The terrace offers gorgeous architecture and magnificent views. If only the balcony at my apartment had this view.

Zwinger

The Zwinger is an early 18th-century palace and historical landmark in the center of the Dresden. It is known as one of the best examples of Baroque architecture. The Zwinger contains a group of galleries and pavilions which holds a variety artwork and artifacts.

Fürstenzug

The famous Fürstenzug or “The Procession of Princes” is an 101-meter-long mural. More than 24,000 tiles were used to represent the princes, kings, scientists, artisans, and other leading German figures. I can’t even imagine placing over 24,000 tiles! Talk about dedication. Plus, the detail is exquisite.

Yenidze

Fun fact: this mosque-like building began as a cigarette factory! Today, it houses offices, a restaurant, and Dresden’s highest beer garden. I actually had no idea it had a beer garden when I was there and am now extremely disappointed. But anyways, one of my favorite parts of this building is its stained glass dome.

Dresden is a city in Germany that is often not talked about, but should be. It is one of those cities that deserves more attention. It is the perfect city to spend the day wandering arounds its streets. If you are traveling through Europe, check out my other blog on underrated cities in Europe.
